ALWAYS THANKFUL
Besides the personal Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends, November was always the time that we ended our year at Conner Prairie and gave thanks for our volunteers. With the volunteer year moving to a regular calendar year starting in 2020, our official thank you and recognition event is moving too but the sentiment remains the same, and what better time to be thankful for our volunteers than this month of Thanksgiving. So while there isn’t an official event to recognize and thank you this month, we want to do it anyway. This past year it seems that we’ve asked volunteers to do more and more. There were more school tours, more Symphony on the Prairie concerts, more core experience positions to name a few and now, a whole new 16-night event starting this month – A Merry Prairie Holiday. Conner Prairie volunteers have stepped in to help with all these things and more without skipping a beat. You don’t ask why we need the help, just how and when you can. You take on many of the thankless jobs that staff couldn’t possibly have the time to do without your help. You work alongside us no matter what the weather conditions are for very little pay. Whether it’s tending our gardens, greeting thousands of everyday guests and school children, helping in the store, mending or sewing historic costumes, weaving and knitting items for the store, selling memberships, driving our vehicles or helping with a variety of other events and programs, there is no task too big or too small for Conner Prairie volunteers and you prove that every day. Thank you for a successful year so far and for your continued support through the end of 2019. We couldn’t do it without you - and we really wouldn’t want to! From all the staff at Conner Prairie and especially from me and Pam, we’re sending a heartfelt thank you to each and every one of you and wishing you all a very Happy Thanksgiving.
HEADLESS HORSEMAN RIDES INTO THE SUNSET
This was a strange and wonderful year for the Headless Horseman at Conner Prairie. The temps were unusually mild for most of the event and even though two nights were canceled due to weather, it ended up a record year with 37,990 people attending. Many thanks are due to all of you who volunteered, helping us bring our frightfully delightful brand of Conner Prairie fun to our members and guests. This is a massive undertaking (my favorite pun) each year and we thank you for your help to make it happen!
COMING UP IN DECEMBER
We’ve got a little thing called A Merry Prairie Holiday (MPH) making its’ inaugural appearance at Conner Prairie starting November 29. This event runs Friday-Sunday every weekend through December 29 concluding with a fireworks finale on New Years’ Eve. Activities include a North Pole Village, local musicians and artisans, a winter wonderland wagon ride through the historic grounds filled with thousands of twinkling lights, all under the shimmering backdrop of a local, time-honored favorite moving to a new home at Conner Prairie: the Reynolds Farm Equipment Christmas Lights. Volunteers are needed to help and all positions are listed for scheduling in Volgistics.
Help is also needed setting up for MPH. Shifts are posted in Volgistics for every weekday in November through 11/27. Duties include helping to set the Reynolds lights in place, setting up tables and chairs, hanging décor and signage and decorating the Welcome Center.
Another favorite for kids, Gingerbread Jamboree returns in December. The farmer’s wife is baking a gingerbread man, but he escaped the oven and is on the loose! The kids will look for clues and footprints around Conner Prairie and if lucky, maybe get to meet him! Students will learn about characters, setting, and sequencing while celebrating a treasured story, concluding with a sweet treat! Positions for Gingerbread Jamboree will be posted soon in Volgistics.
