Moms Making History: Thriving Together at Conner Prairie

Stroller Strides 2024 48

The demands of raising children often mean putting yourself on the back burner. You’re wiping noses, changing diapers, folding endless piles of laundry, or trying to remember the last time you had a moment to yourself. It can feel like you’re running on fumes. And I know you’ve heard the saying, “You can’t pour from an empty cup.” Yet somehow, you’re probably still managing to keep pouring. It’s exhausting. So, what I’m about to suggest might sound like it will add to your exhaustion but trust me—you CAN do hard things!

Getting out of the house (which is the hardest part), finding your community (putting yourself out there—I know, it can be scary), and moving your body isn’t just a luxury; it’s essential for your mental and physical well-being. And trust me, as someone who’s been there, it’s a game-changer.

Nature is the Ultimate Reset Button

There’s something undeniably restorative about being outside. Fresh air, sunlight, and the gentle rustle of leaves can do wonders for moms, who are often enduring sensory overload—constant noise, clutter, and demands—nature provides the perfect reset. Studies show that spending time in nature reduces stress, boosts mood, and even improves concentration. It helps calm an overactive mind and allows space for clarity and peace.

Have you tried the 1,000 Hours Outside challenge? It’s a fantastic way to prioritize time outdoors and create lasting memories with your little ones. Conner Prairie offers the perfect setting to help you meet those outdoor goals, with stroller-friendly trails and breathtaking natural landscapes.

Move Your Body, Heal Your Mind

However, without adequate support, many moms struggle with feelings of isolation, exhaustion, and even postpartum mood disorders. In fact, research shows that mental health disorders impact up to 20% of new mothers, and a lack of movement and social interaction can exacerbate these challenges.

But you know what helps? Movement and nature! Regular exercise has been shown to reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance overall resilience—benefits that are particularly crucial for caregivers. Yet, sadly, only 24% of women (probably less for moms) between the ages of 24 and 55 exercise regularly. At Conner Prairie, the Trails at Conner Prairie offer an ideal space to enjoy movement while connecting with nature, helping moms feel rejuvenated and supported.

You Don’t Have to Do Hard Things Alone

With FIT4MOM North Indy, we’ve created a welcoming space for moms to come as you are and move your body in ways that empower and strengthen you—not just for today, but for longevity. Imagine enjoying the Trails at Conner Prairie while having a great conversation with another adult. This might be the only time in your whole day you can talk to someone other than your kids and engage with your baby in class! Show them what it means to take care of yourself. You can do hard things, mama (including packing up and leaving the house—wink wink)! And you’ll do it with a support system that’s cheering you on every step of the way. Many caregivers manage to make it out of the house but rarely make a real friend. Loneliness among moms is a common yet often unspoken struggle. At Conner Prairie and FIT4MOM North Indy, we believe community is the antidote to isolation.

Programs like Stroller Strides create opportunities for meaningful connections. Beyond the workouts, these moments of shared laughter, encouragement, and understanding can lead to lifelong friendships. Together, we can change the narrative and ensure no mom feels like they’re navigating this journey alone.

This year, FIT4MOM North Indy was honored as Franchisee of the Year—a testament to our unwavering dedication to supporting caregivers through wellness, connection, and empowerment.
