Founded officially in 1872, Norwood is a Reconstruction Era settlement outside the boundaries of Indianapolis. Norwood’s founders were African American veterans from Kentucky because of their service beside the Indiana 28th Regiment during the last years of the Civil War. Norwood and its partner community Barrington sat as stable, independent Freetowns until they were annexed into Indianapolis in 1912. Our market offers historic and handmade goods including custom pottery, textiles, meat products from our heritage breeds animals and the latest Prairie Provision products, developed by our Agriculture department. Get behind-the-scenes look at our classes and workshops to see demonstrations of how these products are made and information on how you can sign up for a class and develop the skills to make your own piece of history.
