Follow the North Star

Follow the North Star

Follow the North Star is an award-winning, participatory museum theater experience that demonstrates the wide ranging social attitudes toward African-Americans in pre-Civil War Indiana. Participants travel back to the year 1836 and assume the role of fugitive slaves seeking freedom on the Underground Railroad through the state. Traveling as a group, you will encounter a variety of characters, ranging from sympathetic allies to racist antagonists. It is a powerful experience that generates empathy, provokes discussion, and immerses visitors in this important part of our nation’s history.

Tours leave every 15 minutes beginning at 6:30 pm. The entire experience lasts approximately 1 hour, 45 minutes. Click "purchase tickets" below and select your preferred start time.

You'll Walk Away with a lot to Think About

Conner Prairie’s nationally acclaimed, award-winning Follow the North Star experience, developed from years of extensive research, is unlike any other. This interactive glimpse into our shared past will affect you in ways that reading a book or watching a movie about it cannot.

Teachers - See our field trips section for ways to include your students in the program. Or, sign up for the Follow the North Star public evening program and pay $19 per student.

Follow the North Star is not for everyone. You should be prepared to take on the role of an escaped slave; you'll be walking outside on rough terrain in all kinds of weather, told to keep your eyes focused downward and spoken to in an abrupt manner.
