Arbor Day Celebration
April 26 & 27
It's a perfect time to get outside and explore nature! During our two day Arbor Day celebration, you can talk with foresters and discover what trees grow in Indiana and how they are used, and meet local craftsmen as they demonstrate their skills. Explore the grounds to see how many different types of trees you can identify. How about making your own Treetop Outpost? End your visit by getting your own free tree to take home and plant (while supplies last).
Discover the art and science of fibers through a variety of activities, demonstrations and meet-and-greets with our four-legged fiber friends. Watch historically accurate sheep herding demonstrations, a natural way of moving livestock that's been around for more than 1,500 years. Demonstrations will show how these dogs skillfully get their sheep moving in the right direction. And don't miss the many hands-on activities, like brushing and spinning wool into yarn using an ancient drop spindle, or felting wool into shapes, as well as discussions about the history of sheep husbandry.
Heirloom Plant Sale
May 10, 4-7 p.m.
May 11, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Choose from a variety of heirloom plants, including tomatoes, peppers, herbs, and flowers. Mother's Day weekend often marks the beginning of our gardening season in central Indiana as it's now safe to plant outside without fear of a late frost. Join your fellow gardeners and foodies to start your garden season out right with our popular heirloom plants.
May 11, 9:30-11:30 a.m.
Celebrate spring's blooms and learn flower names on a guided one-hour walk along our Nature Trail. Guests will be instructed in the use of Lawrence Newcomb's system of wildflower identification, then use it to identify flowers along the trail. Afterward, guests can make a bee/insect hotel to take home, along with their very own copy of Newcomb's Wildflower Guide book! Camera's welcome, nature journals encouraged.
