1859 Balloon Voyage
A Planned Exhibit at Conner Prairie
History of Vision
Conner Prairie is best suited to tell this story in the manner it should be told—outdoors in its natural setting, in a dramatic fashion and in the historic context that allows guests the opportunity to relive and place themselves in this notable moment in history in a way that cannot be captured indoors or by reading a book.
And not only is Conner Prairie the perfect place for the story, but 2009 is the perfect time—as it will mark the 150th anniversary of John Wise’s balloon launch in Lafayette.
Mr. Eli Lilly founded Conner Prairie with his vision “to connect people with history in ways books cannot.” The 1859 Balloon Voyage is a continuation of his vision, much like the preservation of the 1823 Conner House and the immersive experience of visiting 1836 Prairietown.
Giving the commitment to offering hands-on educational experiences and preserving the fabric of Indiana’s past, the 1859 Balloon Voyage continues Conner Prairie’s spirit of excellence in telling stories of significance and bringing them to life in ways that are exciting and educational.
